ABOUT ME

Adam Lasky | Having fun behind the lens

Motivated by a desire to come back with some better photos than I could take with my iPhone on an African safari taken years ago, I set out on a journey to learn as much as I could about photography for a year in advance of the trip.  After the trip, I sold all of the camera equipment and lenses I'd gathered along the way...only to realize about 30 seconds later that it was the silliest thing I'd ever done.  I'd developed a new passion, and over the years that followed I found myself getting more and more excited by the opportunity to refine my talents for documenting memories behind the lens.

Whether it was taking photos of my wife or daughter (my favorite subjects), images of breathtaking landscapes, portraits of friends and family, or travel shots from around the globe, I learned just how much fun it is to freeze time with the click of a shutter and create images that capture the moment.

What's This?

So it turns out that any photography venture is better if it has a name...and while I guess I could have named it myself, I decided long before I ever had a photography venture that I'd let a (then) toddler name it.

In honor of my daughter Venezia's favorite catchphrase, welcome to "What's This" Photography.

This was always the question, whether in reference to  a color, a kitchen appliance, a TV show, or...most importantly...one of dad's countless photos.  And hence, "What's This" Photography was born.

By attempting to bring the same sense of curiosity to every scene I capture as did that two-year-old (and...some might argue..maturity level), my goal is to have someone react with that same question when they see one of my images..

"What's this?  I want to go there!"  "What's this?  A photo of your family on the mall?"

At "What's This" Photography, we have only one rule: keep it fun along the way.

I can rein in my ocassionally less-than-appropriate sense of humor depending on the audience, but if we're not all having a good time, the photos will show it.  We're taking pictures with a camera...not solving geopolitical quagmires...so while I want everyone to enjoy the images that result from our collaboration, life's too short for us not to enjoy a few laughs along the way.

Whether it's sports (I spent a decade early in my career working in baseball), the oh-so-fun-and-cliche shared complaints of raising kids, the futility of my efforts at learning Spanish, the long list of places around the world we're dying to see...if it's a thing that exists in the world, I'm probably up for talking about it!
